Backgrounds, gone.
I built ihatebg because I was tired of background removers that hold your full-resolution download hostage. This one runs entirely on your device. Drop a photo, get a transparent PNG. That is the whole business model.
Your cutouts
More from the ihate family
Also free, also runs entirely on your device: bring black-and-white photos back to color. No signup, no watermark, full resolution.
See it work
A real result from ihatebg, not a mockup. Drag the handle.
How it works
Drop your photos
Up to 20 at a time. JPG, PNG, or WebP. They stay in your browser the whole time.
The AI downloads once
About 170MB, one time. After that it lives in your browser and works offline. Your photos are processed on your device, never sent anywhere.
Download your PNGs
Full resolution, transparent background. One by one, or all of them as a ZIP.
Do not take my word for it
Open DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and process a photo. You will see zero requests. That is the entire privacy policy: your images never leave this tab.
Why I built this
The biggest name in background removal is shutting down its standalone product on December 1, 2026. Its free tier always capped downloads at a tiny 447 pixels. I wanted the opposite.
Full resolution, free
No account. Nothing uploaded, ever. 20 images per batch. Works offline after your first visit.
447 pixels
That is the documented free download cap. And the standalone product shuts down on December 1, 2026.
On December 1, 2026, remove.bg's standalone website and API shuts down and background removal becomes a Canva paid feature. The 447px figure is their documented free-tier download cap. Read the full comparison.
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No accounts, no watermarks, no resolution caps, no download limits. I will keep the tool itself free. If this gets big, I might sell one quiet sponsorship slot or a paid API for shops. The tool stays free.
Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model downloads to your browser once (about 170MB), and from then on every photo is processed on your device. Open your browser's DevTools, watch the Network tab while you process a photo: zero requests.
Why does the first visit take a while?
Your browser is downloading the AI model one time. It gets cached, so later visits are instant and the whole thing works offline.
What AI does it use?
An open-source image segmentation model, running locally in your browser. No servers involved, no API calls, nothing to leak.
Which browsers work?
Any modern browser. Chrome and Edge are fastest because they can use your graphics card. Safari and Firefox work too, just a bit slower.
What is happening to remove.bg?
Their standalone website and API shuts down on December 1, 2026, and background removal becomes a Canva paid feature. ihatebg exists so there is still a free option with full-resolution downloads.
Nothing here yet. One day, one company gets this spot.
I am in no hurry.
